Press Release

/
Galerie Gilla Lörcher is very pleased to present “Berry me!”, the third solo show by Berlin-based artist IRIS MUSOLF (born 1980).

For the exhibition, Iris Musolf has selected a small concrete object that arouses irritating associations with Venus von Willendorf, and 14 monochrome paintings from the “Gloss” series. The artist, who occasionally also uses make-up materials for her artistic work, used the color palette of a lip gloss brand and their onomatopoeic names for the Gloss series. The titles of the works that were created read like the lexicon of supposedly female characteristics: indulgent, innocent, passionate etc.
Curator Jean-Christophe Ammann wrote about the Gloss series created in 2014: “When Iris Musolf uses lip gloss across the board, something is systematically covered, embellished and given a shine. (...) It is the appearance that breaks. This is an old topic, but precisely because of this, from today's perspective, it is brought before our eyes with an almost brutal harshness. The works have a political, socially critical background, without moving in the pattern of exhausted terms. The collective grips with the individual and the individual with the collective." (Excerpt from: on the occasion of the Limbo & Paradise exhibition, Frankfurt, 2015)
