REBOUNDS

Galerie Gilla Lörcher | Contemporary Art is very pleased to present the REBOUNDS solo exhibition of Ivan Liovik Ebel starting on 22 March. The painting series REBOUNDS was invented by the artist en passant while playing with a basketball in his studio. How to imagine the painting process with a basketball? For sure very noisy. The artist plays and smashes the oil paint coacted basketballs with full body activity to the canvas. The ball surface structures leave its traces on the canvas. And that is how Ivan Liovik Ebel creates these works.

The REBOUNDS series seems to be less conceptual than previous series of the artist. But as well these works, created in a performative process, follow a geometric composition and structure that is so typical for Ebel.
Movement and velocity, in which the media (the ball) creates by chance what the artist can not control, is fusioned with a clear artistic and planned spacial structure. Taking a closer look to the REBOUND paintings, you will realize the complexity of layers the painting consits of. All with different grades of intransparency, like fog, creating a three dimensional appearance.
You may perceive as well the contrast of the violent painting process and the tranquility, that comes from the painting, which on first sight seem to be nearly monochrome.
Asking the artist, how this series is connected with his previous artworks and series, he says: „All of my works are distinguished by an attempt to freeze a non freezable moment. A moment that mark the edge of antagonistic categories such as: the past and the future, the visible and the non-visible, the inner and the outer, the surface and the volume. I am fascinated and always looking for this relativity of perception switch.“


Ivan Liovik Ebel (born in 1983 in Neuchatel / CH) lives and works in Berlin. He received his Masters in Contemporary Arts Practice from the Bern University of the Arts. In 2017 the artist was on the short list of the Aeschlimann Corti-Stipend and in 2015 he was nominated for the Berlin Art Prize.
His work has been exhibited in numerous exhibitions: at Kunsthaus Langenthal (CH), Kunsthalle Bern (CH), Kunstmuseum Bern (CH), CACN Centre d’Art Contemporain de Nîmes (F), Neue Galerie, London (GB) and Bern (CH), Marks Blond Project, Bern (CH), ZQM Projektraum, Berlin (DE), Lage Egal Projektraum, Berlin (DE), Galerie Widmer Theodoridis, Zürich (CH), Annka Kultys Gallery, London (GB), Galerie Valérie Delaunay / Paris (F), Galerie 3000, Bern (CH), Espace Art & Essai, Rennes (F), Galerie Gilla Lörcher I Contemporary Art, Berlin (DE), among many others and as well at art fairs such as Art Karlsruhe 2017 (booth Galerie Gilla Lörcher).
